The Leintwardine Players

Karen Raymond and Neil Cooper-James performing in Alan Ayckbourn’s one-act play, ‘Gosforth Fete’

The Leintwardine Players was originally formed in 2011 to provide the inhabitants of the village and surrounding area with opportunities to indulge their love of reading and performing.  Over the intervening fourteen years the group has met in the Community Centre on the third Thursday of every month (except August and November) to perform: radio plays,  presentations exploring themes In Shakespeare’s work, readings of poems and proses on a chosen theme, and full-blown performances of plays. Our most recent performance was ‘The Night Before Christmas’, a Christmas review played to a full house and showcasing some of the music and drama skills we are fortunate enough to have in the village.

Over the past year we have enjoyed the following activities:

  • Performing radio plays
  • Exploring the theme of ‘Identity’ in the works of Shakespeare
  • Performing Dennis Potter’s ‘Blue Remembered Hills’
  • Choosing favourite poems and prose extracts to read to explore the idea of  ‘Childhood’
  • Performing the comedy ‘ Gosforth Fete’ by Alan Ayckbourn
  • Taking groups to different locations in the village to tell the stories of historical scandals
  • Reading a dramatic adaptation of ‘Wind in the Willows’
  • Performing an original play ‘The lock-down’
  • Visiting the theatre in Malvern to see a performance of ‘Birdsong’
  • Presenting the Christmas Review ‘The Night Before Christmas’

As you can see, we try to provide a varied diet throughout the year. If anyone is interested in joining the group, be assured  a warm welcome and a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.  Nobody is pressured into doing anything they don’t want to do.  For some that might include writing and directing their own play, for others, it might be just reading a short, scripted part, or perhaps helping with sound effects or lighting.

Come along to one of our sessions and give it a try.

Please do not be put off if you feel that learning lines is beyond you – we are all in the same boat.  This is why we employ devious ways of keeping such onerous tasks to an absolute minimum.
