The Leintwardine Social Group, formally known as the Evergreens, is open to all ages. It is run in the daytime, so that those who prefer to go out then, rather than evenings, have a chance to socialise.
Over the past year, there have been some larger, well attended meetings with a lecture style format and inspiring speakers. The feedback from core members brought out a slight preference for smaller meetings which are more interactive and possibly in a circle format. This allows participants to interact more together. Others in the village have also given feedback that some of the topics last year were much appreciated for their subject matter, such as Ocean Rowing and Antarctica. In this coming year, there will be a mixture of informal talks, trips to a garden, a shopping centre, and some meals out.
Over the next few months, we intend to have a talk on Guide Dogs for the Blind, a meal at the Lion Restaurant, a musical meeting, and a trip to Westonbury Mill Water Gardens. We also hope to work with our local primary school on a topic like ‘nature’. We will also have a games/jigsaws afternoon, and regular informal meals out for those wanting to connect regularly. Do look out for publicised events in the ‘What’s On’ leaflet each month.
We meet once a month, on the fourth Wednesday of each month, usually in the Leintwardine Community Centre from 2 pm till 4 pm.
Anyone is welcome, including those living outside Leintwardine.
Tea and cake is served and the standard cost is £3 which covers refreshments. There is usually a topic of interest or an activity (like music) which brings the group together for the afternoon. The aim is to build community connections. Trips out are organised by the group and enable those finding it difficult to get out, a chance to shop or see a place of interest, as transport is provided by friendly volunteers. There is no subscription, just ‘pay cash at the door’ for the topics that interest you. For some participants, it can help to get to know others (you might be new to the area) or just to have a point of contact with others at least once a month, (or more often).
Volunteers are always welcomed. The group is managed by the Royal Voluntary Service, but run in a relaxed way by its co-ordinator, Jane Allen-Brown. Contact Jane by mobile phone or email her (contact details below) if you want to find out more, either to come along to the group or to volunteer. I often invite interested parties for coffee and a chat to answer their questions about the group.
